Experimental and numerical study of shock wave propagation over cylinders and spheres

This is a preliminary study of shock wave attenuation over arrays of cylinder and spheres. Firstly shock wave propagation over a single cylinder was investigated experimentally and numerically. Secondly the result was extended to shock wave attenuation over arrays of cylinders and spheres. The experiment was conducted in a 60 mm X 150 mm diaphragmless shock tube equipped with double exposure holographic interferometry. Numerical simulations were carried out by using a finite volume, Euler and Navier-Stokes solvers. A higher degree o f reproducibility o f the shock tube enabled to conduct sequential experiments under identical initial conditions by successively varying delay time s o as to rearrange the visualized images in animated display. Good agreement was obtained between the experiment and numerical result.
